Iquitos

Founded bewteen 1754 and 1764 by the jesuit missionaries with the name of “Santa Maria de Iquitos”, a city with more than 300,000 inhabitants and located by the Nanay, Itaya and Amazon rivers. It is one of the most important river port of the department as through this city the supplies are distributed to all the region, which makes it a very active commercial city.

The city of Iquitos was considered in a time the most important rubber producer of the Department of Loreto which caused big constructions as the Casa de Hierro (built by Gustavo Eiffel, builder of the famous tower that has its name), which are cultural heritage of the city.

Since 1970, Iquitos has been the exploration and drilling oil center of the Amazon, becoming the pillar of the region, with the oil as its biggest export field.

In contrast to the trade of the city, Iquitos offers exotic natural landscapes that because of their geographical location are in the middle of the jungle and invite tourists to enjoy the ecological magic areas offered by one of region with widest biodiverity in the world. This region has protected areas to conserve the biodiversity of the existing ecosystems whether in land and aquatic of the amazonic jungle as through the years it was threatened by the man.
