This is the smallest monkey in the world, well-known also as “pocket monkey”. Its head and neck are dark brown with small light color spots; its tail is surrounded by black rings. These monkeys eat fruits, insects, small vertebrates and sap from trees which is an important source of food for them. In order to obtain it, they use their strong incisive teeth to make holes in the bark of the trees, task they do most of their time. The Pygmy marmoset lives in rainforests, next to waterways. It has diurnal and arboreal habits.
The Pygmy marmoset lives in troops of six members, with one monogamous male and one female with usually 4 offspring or more. Sometimes there are two males, but one is the dominant and restricts the access to the female. They are able to jump vertically upwards up to 5 meters. After a period of 119 to 140 days of pregnancy, the female give birth two offspring (rarely three).
They are characterized to emit very acute high wave sounds that are imperceptible for the human ear. They communicate with every member of the group through face expressions or body positions. They are 12 to 16 centimeters tall, with 23 centimeters of tail. Their weight is approximately 150 grams. The average of life in the jungle is from 11 to 12 years old. Their main enemies are birds of prey.
Unfortunately for observers, due to the small size and fast movements, these small primates are difficult to see. The habitat of Pygmy Marmoset is located in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and western Brazil.
The Pink Dolphin is the biggest representative of all river dolphins. They have a sort of radar in its brain called Echolocation, which helps finding small fishes or prawns, their favorite food. Besides, the echolocation helps pink dolphins to move around without colliding with objects in the water.
Pink Dolphins have a very large snout with many teeth and sensorial bristles that allow finding food at the bottom of the river. Instead of having a dorsal fin like the marine dolphins, they have a hump extended by all its body. Pink Dolphins can not breathe underneath the water, for that reason, they need to move their heads outside the water every two minutes, more or less, to take air through the spiracle that is the unique orifice their nose has. Adult Individuals get to measure 3 meters length and about 160 kilograms weight. In their neck they have some loose bones called the “Cervical Vertebras” and they can turn it from one side to another very easily.
Usually, Dolphins are ready to have offspring when reaching ten years old more or less. The female takes its baby in the belly for eleven months, and only one baby is born after this time. The young dolphin remains next to its mother by the lapse of a year and a half, because it’s still being fed with maternal milk. Many scientists assure that in its life, dolphins can get to live up to 30 years.
There are only five species of river dolphins in the world. The Pink Dolphin of the Amazon River, the dolphin of the Ganges River in the India, the dolphin of the Indo River in Pakistan, the Chinese lacustrine dolphin in the Yangtze river known as “the great yellow river”, and the Silver Dolphin that lives from Ubatuba to the Valdez Peninsula, in Argentina. All are very similar but differ in the color and size of their snouts. The biggest dolphins are the Amazon pink dolphin and the Ganges Dolphin, the smallest is the Silver Dolphin.
The black Cayman is the biggest member of the Alligatoridae family in the world. They are brown or more frequently blackish color, big and rounded snout. The young Caymans present yellow spots and stripes. The young individuals have yellow marks on their body and tail. Black Caymans can get to measure 6 meters long although the usual size is 2 to 3 meters.
Its habits are nocturnal; they generally live in big water extensions like lakes in the forest, also great rivers, swampy areas and creeks with calm current. Its diet basically consists of fish and completing it with some animals or birds.
It is oviparous; the incubation takes about 12 to 13 weeks, or even less. The number of breeds they have is from 30 to 65. This Black Cayman builds its nest in mound shapes with mud or leaves.
Black Cayman has three great enemies, Jaguar, Green Anaconda and the humans. Black Cayman is an animal in danger of extinction, hunters have been killing it for many years to get its valuable skin, which is illegally sold and this population has dramatically decreased because of that. The Black Cayman lives in the Amazon basin, from the conjunction that gives its birth in Peru to the borders of Bolivia.
Hoatzins are birds with unmistakable prehistoric look. They measure approximately from 61 to 68.5 centimeters. Hoatzins have a digestive system similar to that of the ruminants. They basically eat fruits and leaves. Hoatzins own a very big crop where leaves can be stored. Their digestion lasts many hours; therefore they are usually seen resting in a branch.
It is commonly found wherever there is water, especially in small lakes. Hoatzin’s scent is similar to a horse’s, and for that reason villagers do not eat them. Hoatzins are always seen in groups, so they are considered as very social birds.
Hoatzins fly with difficulty and only short distances. It is characterized by its poor mobility. Hoatzins have powerful nails to hold on the branches. Their chicks have claws in their wings, which are used to hold on their mothers when these ones, very often, launch into the waters to escape from predators. Females lay from 2 to 4 small yellowish with pink or brown marks eggs.
Their nests are always in the extended branches over the water. All group members cooperate to take care of the nests; all chicks are fed by adults of the group. Hoatzins live in the forest of the Amazon and Orinoco basins.
This is the greatest rodent of the world, sometimes gets 1.3 meters long and weighs 60 kilograms. It is yellowish brown color or totally cinnamon. Its diet mainly consists of grass as aquatic plants, buds, palm leaves and fruits. In inhabited zones he is always visible by day or at night.
When it is swimming, the hole of their nose, its eyes and ears are the only body parts over the surface. Also, it can swim completely submerged. Its head is long and rectangular, its snout is square and voluminous; it has small, cleared and naked ears, its eyes are small and dark coffee color, it does not have a tail. He is gregarious, gets to form groups of 8 to 10 individuals. The Capybara reaches sexual maturity when weighting 40 kilograms; here it is when it is ready to reproduce. The female can give birth up to 8 young with about 800 grams weight each at the time of being born. Its habitat is in swamps and flooded primary forests and near the river shores.
They are the most intelligent rodents. They flee in an organized manner, females lead the group, males in the rear and all the breeds are protected in the middle of the group. They walk in row and in flocks of 30 individuals. It’s a closed group, they do not have patience with the intruders and if they have to fight they do it to bites. They do not like to alternate with other species in their territory.
When the Capybara detects some danger emits a hissing sound and all other Capybaras alerted go to water.
